UICC unites the cancer community to address antimicrobial resistance ahead of the 2024 UN high-level meeting
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing threat affecting all medical treatments, and the United Nations International Committee on Cancer (UICC) is intensifying efforts to highlight current evidence, strengthen research and knowledge on AMR and cancer care, and share best practices. AMR is disproportionately affected by cancer, with infections being the second most common cause of death among cancer patients. The UICC has formed a taskforce on AMR and cancer control, focusing on data collection, surveillance, improving access to quality assured medicines and diagnostics, and integrating AMR into national cancer strategies and policies. To galvanize its community for the HLM and the period following, UICC is organizing events and activities to spur collaboration across AMR, infectious diseases, and non-communicable diseases sectors. Notable initiatives include a communications drive, Virtual Dialogues, a side event at the World Health Assembly, and a briefing in New York. The 2024 high-level meeting on AMR is an ideal opportunity to unite the cancer community and other stakeholders for a collective approach to AMR, building on efforts initiated by the 2016 declaration.
