To conquer antimicrobial resistance in Africa, build local capacity
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global issue, particularly in Africa. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that ignoring warnings about AMR could lead to a decline in infectious disease deaths. AMR is a result of evolutionary pressure on infectious organisms, leading to antibiotic-resistant organisms that no longer respond to recommended treatments. The continent already bears an unequal burden of infectious diseases, with sub-Saharan Africa accounting for 65% of HIV cases. Root causes include limited antibiotic supplies and lack of clean, safe water in hospitals.
