The United Nations Must Ensure Sustainable Access to Effective Antibiotics

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing concern that affects human, animal, and environmental sectors more broadly than traditional health issues. The gradual accumulation of resistance genes in disease-causing bacteria, leading to the ability to evade antibiotics, has led to AMR. The term “antimicrobial resistance” is too technical for most audiences, and the general population is not well-understood. Despite the widespread exposure to bacterial infections, antibiotic resistance has not received the attention it deserves from public health agencies and patient groups.
