The social burden of antimicrobial resistance: what is it, how can wemeasure it, and why does it matter?

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat, with its social burden as important as health and economic burdens. Four dimensions of AMR’s social burden include population distribution, patient experiences, intervention burden, and societal change. The article highlights the need for interdisciplinary engagement to address AMR, incorporating diverse data and evidence, and addressing invisibility through data in surveillance and research. Recognizing and measuring AMR’s social burdens will advance AMR approaches and develop equitable solutions.
