The Role of Legislation in the FAO’s Need for Antimicrobials on Farms for Sustainable Agrifood Systems Transformation Initiative

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant threat to human and animal health, food safety, and food security. FAO has has launched a 10-year initiative called RENOFARM to manage AMR in the food and agriculture sectors. The initiative focuses on five areas: Good Health Services, Good Production Practices, Good Alternatives, Good Incentives, and Good Connection. Good Health Services include access to robust veterinary services, disease treatment, vaccinations, and sanitary measures. Good Production Practices involve the implementation of good agricultural and husbandry practices, such as biosecurity measures, hygiene, and waste management. Good Alternatives include vaccines, improved biosecurity measures, and alternative feeds. Good Incentives involve regulatory frameworks to incentivize compliance and monitoring of veterinary and animal production standards. Good Connection involves structured information sharing and reporting systems for effective disease surveillance, emergency response, and coordinated animal health management.
