The changing landscape of antimicrobial resistance and use in South Africa: The need for access to new antibiotics: A position paper
Antibiotic resistance is a global issue causing disproportionate mortality in low- and middle-income countries. In South Africa, it’s increasing in public and private healthcare sectors, particularly in Gram-negative organisms. The World Health Organization’s watch and reserve antibiotics are being used more. Improved access to new antibiotics is needed to limit side-effects and improve patient outcomes. Responsible introduction of these antibiotics with administrative and clinical oversight is proposed to preserve their longevity.
