Surveillance and Genomic Characterization of Colistin-Resistant Gram-Negative Bacteria in Drains of Hospital High-Risk Units

  03 March 2025

The study investigates the presence of colistin-resistant Gram-negative (ColR-GN) bacteria in high-risk hospital units at the University Medical Center Groningen. Environmental sampling and whole-genome sequencing were conducted to identify mobile colistin resistance genes, chromosomal point mutations, and gene alterations. Results showed Enterobacter spp. as the most abundant genus, with twelve isolates exhibiting colistin resistance. The study emphasizes the importance of monitoring antibiotic-resistant bacteria in healthcare environments to prevent their spread.
