Shigella sonnei: epidemiology, evolution, pathogenesis, resistance and host interactions

Shigella sonnei, a global diarrheal pathogen, is increasing due to demographic and environmental factors. Historically, it has been less studied than Shigella flexneri and dysenteriae. Recent research has provided new insights into its epidemiology, microbiology, and pathogenesis. Genomic surveillance has also revealed antimicrobial resistance and evolution. This review assesses the impact of new data on future vaccine development.
