New WHO report presents progress in G7 countries in tackling antibiotic pipeline crisis
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health threat causing over a million deaths annually. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global AMR Research and Development (R&D) Hub have released a report for G7 Finance and Health Ministers detailing progress on incentivizing the development of new antibacterial treatments. The report highlights the urgent need for innovative strategies to enhance research and preserve access to essential antibiotics. Public and philanthropic investments in AMR R&D have reached US$ 13.75 billion annually since 2017, but experts suggest an additional US$ 250 million to 400 million per year is required to sustain antibiotic development. The G7 Health Ministers have committed to funding push incentives, expediting pull incentives, supporting the Global AMR R&D Hub, and SECURE, an initiative to improve access to new and existing antibiotics.
