New antifungal breaks the mould

Drug resistance in disease-causing fungi is a significant public health issue, resulting in death from infections. This issue has been ongoing since the emergence of fungal cells two billion years ago. Bacteria have evolved small-molecule products that slow or kill fungi, and fungi adapt by developing resistance tactics. The cycle continues as bacteria respond with more sophisticated molecular weapons. Some natural products have been discovered and used as clinical treatments, and an antifungal molecule has been discovered with potential therapeutic relevance.
