Multidrug-resistant Salmonella Typhi among symptomatic and asymptomatic children in informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya
Multidrug-resistant Salmonella Typhi (MDR) infections pose a significant global health concern. A study in Nairobi, Kenya, found that 215 presumed S. Typhi isolates were confirmed in symptomatic and asymptomatic children. The majority of these isolates were resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim, as well as cephalosporin or fluoroquinolone. The study also found blaTEM−D, AMR genes in 84% of the isolates. The findings underscore the need for continued surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and mass immunization of children in urban informal areas.
