Innovative drug delivery methods for combating antimicrobial resistance

  26 August 2024

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health threat, causing increased morbidity and mortality. Innovative drug delivery methods are being developed to combat AMR by improving antibiotic efficacy and developing new therapeutic approaches. One approach is the development of targeted drug delivery systems using nanotechnology, which can deliver drugs directly to infection sites, reducing side effects and enhancing drug concentration. Combination therapies, such as co-delivery with adjuvants or resistance-modifying agents, can counteract resistance mechanisms. Smart drug delivery systems, which respond to environmental stimuli, can release antibiotics only in the presence of resistant bacteria, reducing resistance risk. Long-acting formulations and implants provide sustained antibiotic release, improving patient adherence and preventing resistance.
