Implementing the global action plan on antimicrobial resistance: first quadripartite biennial report
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to human health, animal health, agriculture, food production, and environmental ecosystem services. The global action plan on AMR (GAP-AMR) was adopted in 2015, with an initial report produced in 2019. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Health Organization (WHO), and World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) took significant steps to implement the GAP-AMR and developed innovations to support countries in implementing their AMR national action plans (NAPs). The report highlights the need for a more systematic approach to AMR, both through sector-specific action and a joint, collaborative One Health approach. The quadripartite established and supported global governance structures, including the Joint Secretariat, Global Leaders Group on AMR, and the AMR Multi-Partner Trust Fund, to strengthen collaboration and mobilize resources. Urgent action is needed in all sectors, including increased political engagement, robust governance structures, adequate financial resources, technical capacity strengthening, and enforcement of regulations on AMR prescription, use, and disposal.
