High-throughput qPCR profiling of antimicrobial resistance genes and bacterial loads in wastewater and receiving environments

A study quantifies antibiotic resistance genes, MGEs, and bacteria in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), using Resistomap’s Antibiotic Resistance Gene Index. Untreated wastewater has the highest diversity, while treated effluents release substantial loads. The study suggests advanced treatment methods and combined sewer overflow management.
