Flies as carriers of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria in Nigerian hospitals: A workflow for surveillance of AMR bacteria carried by arthropod pests in hospital settings
A pilot study in Nigeria found that flies in hospitals carry antimicrobial resistant bacteria, posing a significant threat to public health. The study found that blaNDM, mecA, and ESBL genes were present in flies, with blaNDM being predominantly carried by Providencia spp., mecA being prevalent in coagulase-negative Staphylococci, and ESBL genes in 40% of flies. This highlights the need for a better understanding of the global clinical significance and burden of AMR due to insect pests.
