Exploring antimicrobial resistance determinants in the Neanderthal microbiome
The study analyzed metagenomic data from dental calculus and fecal sediments from Neanderthal sites in Europe to identify antimicrobial resistance determinants (ARDs). The KMA tool was used to create a comprehensive database, but only identified a limited number of ARDs. The findings suggest a nuanced identification of ARDs in the Neanderthal microbiome’s genetic repertoire, but are limited by factors like environmental DNA contamination and fragmentation.
