Emergence of polymyxin-resistant Yersinia enterocolitica strains in natural aquatic environments
The study reveals the presence of polymyxin-resistant Yersinia enterocolitica, responsible for human yersiniosis, in aquatic environments. The strains demonstrated resistance to ampicillin, cefazolin, polymyxin B, and polymyxin E, and were capable of biofilm production. Whole genome sequencing identified 26 antibiotic resistance genes, and phylogenetic analysis linked them to human and swine strains. This raises concerns about health risks due to their potential high virulence.
