Companions in antimicrobial resistance: examining transmission of common antimicrobial-resistant organisms between people and their dogs, cats, and horses

The study explores the potential role of companion animals as reservoirs for antimicrobial-resistant pathogens that can infect humans. Although antimicrobial usage is lower in companion animals, certain pathogens have similar colonization rates. The close contact between pets, owners, and veterinary professionals provides opportunities for zoonotic transmission of these pathogens. The impact of interspecies AMR transmission is critically reviewed, offering insights for future research and surveillance initiatives.
