Assessing Bacteriological Profiles and Targeting Resistant Bacterial Superbugs to Develop an Antibiogram Aiding in Antibiotic Selection
The rise of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacterial strains, or superbugs, is posing a threat to surgical procedures. These infections often lead to post-surgical infections, increasing morbidity, death, and medical costs. A study conducted in Nellore, India, aimed to identify and isolate the bacterial microbes causing these infections and determine their antibiotic resistance profiles. Out of 738 patients, 324 had Surgical Site Infections (SSI), with 28.6% of them being staphylococcus and 21.3% E.coli. Most organisms were found to be resistant to Cephalosporins, whilst sensitive to Gentamicin. The study highlights the need for accurate, data-driven infection management methods and recommends the use of an antibiogram to reduce the spread of resistant organisms. National surveillance of resistant microbes is also necessary.
