Antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli in semi-intensive and free-range poultry farms in Uganda
Livestock-associated antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Escherichia coli, including resistance to human antibiotics like cefotaxime and colistin, is a significant concern in Uganda. A study collected data from 402 poultry farms found that antibiotic use was linked to production intensity and feed type. Semi-intensive farmers had better knowledge on antibiotic use, while free-range farms had more resistance. Multi-drug resistant E. coli was found in both systems, despite different management practices.
