An Overview of Preventive Strategies and the Role of Various Organizations in Combating Antimicrobial Resistance
The rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health threat due to excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics and is responsible for prolonged illness, longer hospital stays, and economic burden to society. This article aims to review the factors, role of antimicrobial stewardship, preventive strategies, and role of various organizations in combating AMR. Three major factors of AMR are inappropriate and excessive utilization of antibiotics, nonadherence to infection control measures, and the emergence of pathogens that are resistant to multiple drugs. Antimicrobial stewardship initiatives play a vital role in promoting judicious and targeted utilization of antimicrobials, thereby safeguarding their efficacy and mitigating the emergence of resistance.
