AMR disproportionately affects Africa, with 27.3 deaths per 100,000: Africa CDC

Africa is responsible for 95% of malaria deaths, 70% of HIV cases, and 25% of TB deaths globally. Children and women are among the most vulnerable groups. Despite the $2-6 billion needed annually for effective antimicrobial resistance (AMR) response, current funding is only a tenth of that allocated to other major diseases. This underfunding hinders progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. Drug-resistant infections kill 700,000 people annually globally, with Africa accounting for 4.5 million. Fighting disease requires resources and collaboration with member states and partners.
