AMR-detecting wound sensors: sensor arrays to diagnose beta-lactamase activity in a wound

  20 March 2025

Anti-microbial resistance (AMR) is a significant threat to humanity, particularly in chronic wounds that can become colonized with bacteria, leading to wound infection. β-lactam antibiotics are key treatments, but β-lactamases, antibiotic-inactivating enzymes, are the leading cause of AMR. A project aims to use electrochemical sensors to measure β-lactamase enzymes in wound models, allowing for point-of-care analysis like blood glucose testing, in collaboration with the UK Health Security Agency.
