A Screen of Traditional Chinese Medicinal Plant Extracts Reveals 17 Species with Antimicrobial Properties

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing threat to global healthcare, with ESKAPEE pathogens becoming resistant to antibiotics. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used for centuries to treat various ailments, but no plant-derived antibacterial drugs are currently approved for clinical use. This study evaluates the antimicrobial properties of extracts from TCM plants, finding 17 plant species with potent properties against gram-positive organisms. Nearly 100 compounds from identified TCM plants were previously isolated and confirmed for their antimicrobial properties.
