A broad-spectrum lasso peptide antibiotic targeting the bacterial ribosome

Lasso peptides, natural products with a unique knotted fold, are ribosomally synthesized and modified peptides. They have broad-spectrum activity against various bacterial pathogens. Lasso peptide antibiotic lariocidin and its derivative lariocidin B are found to inhibit bacterial growth by binding to the ribosome and interfering with protein synthesis. These peptides are unaffected by resistance mechanisms, have low toxicity to humans, and show potent in vivo activity.
