Impact of educational intervention on knowledge of antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic use patterns among healthcare students: a pre- and post-intervention study

  22 February 2025

The study aimed to evaluate the impact of an educational intervention on healthcare students’ knowledge of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and assess patterns of antibiotic use before and after the intervention. A quasi-experimental pre-and-post study design was conducted with unpaired groups of healthcare students. The intervention included two PowerPoint lectures and question and answer sessions on understanding the spread, impact, and prevention of AMR. Post-intervention, students showed a significant increase in their AMR knowledge, with correct responses increasing from 40.5% pre-intervention to 62.4% post-intervention. Misconceptions about antibiotic resistance and varied antibiotic use patterns were also revealed. The study concluded that educational interventions can improve students’ knowledge of AMR, but more targeted efforts are needed.
