Antimicrobial resistance burden estimates from the bottom-up: research priorities for estimating the impact of antimicrobial resistance in Brazil

Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant public health threat to Latin American healthcare systems, economies, and communities. Global modeling studies have limited impact at local scales, highlighting the need for ‘bottom-up’ AMR policy design. Brazil serves as a case study to illustrate the importance of this approach. Brazil’s decentralized healthcare system would benefit from robust regional estimates of AMR’s clinical, economic, and social burdens. Recommendations from interdisciplinary stakeholder exercises suggest strategic priorities for estimating the AMR burden in Brazil at subnational scales, including focusing on individual-level data linkages, understanding AMR inequalities, and capturing linked clinical, economic, and social burdens.
