Detection of antibiotic resistance genes in MRSA whole-genome sequencing: database comparison and antimicrobial susceptibility correlation

  02 January 2025

This study investigates the characteristics of different databases for detecting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes using whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Data from 270 MRSA strains were collected from 45 institutions across Japan. AMR genes were detected using AMRFinderPlus, CARD, and ResFinder. The average of detected AMR genes per strain varied, with the highest diagnostic accuracy depending on the antibiotic and breakpoint criteria used. The study concludes that further research is needed to determine the optimal use of AMR genes databases in practice.
