Surveillance roadmap
African countries are repurposing genomics capacities acquired during the COVID-19 pandemic to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which causes over 1.27 million deaths annually and contributes to 4.95 million deaths. The Africa-PGI aims to convince African governments to continue investing in genomics, and the surveillance system developed by Nigeria is validating bacterial infection tests across hospitals.
