Potential impact of disinfectants on antimicrobial resistance development: summary
The Chief Scientist’s Group conducted a study to understand the role of disinfectants in the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the UK. The study gathered information on the chemicals used as disinfectants, their usage, and the pathways they can enter the environment. The results showed that information on the amounts used in the UK is not readily available, and many of the substances are also used for other purposes, making it difficult to determine their usage. The study also highlighted the potential for increased antimicrobial resistance following exposure to disinfectants. The lack of information on usage will hinder future management efforts.
