Mind the gap: knowledge, attitudes and perceptions on antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control in long-term care facilities for people with disabilities in the Netherlands

A study assessing antimicrobial resistance (AMR), antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), and infection prevention and control (IPC) in Dutch long-term care facilities for people with intellectual disabilities (ID-LTCFs) found that nonmedically trained professionals had lower knowledge levels about AMR and IPC compared to medically trained professionals. The study also found a lack of easy-read resources and useful information about IPC and AMR. The majority of participants (>90%) reported that AMR and IPC need more attention in the disability care sector. The study suggests that nonmedically trained professionals should be evaluated for improved glove use and setting-specific IPC and hygiene policies.
