Global Economic Impacts of Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat, causing 1.27 million deaths in 2019. Factors affecting AMR include demographic trends and climate risks. A study models the economic impacts of AMR under six scenarios, considering changes in disease incidence, demographic changes, agriculture productivity, climate risks, and government expenditure. Results show a significant global economic burden due to worsening AMR, but also significant economic benefits of addressing it. A “one-health” approach to managing AMR will yield substantial economic benefits.
