Prevalence of opportunistic pathogens and anti-microbial resistance in urban aquaculture ponds

A study in Bangladesh found that bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant concern globally, particularly in aquaculture ponds. The study found that urban ponds have higher bacterial diversity and opportunistic pathogens, with Firmicutes being the most interactive. Drug resistance was the most common type of AMR, while metal resistance was only observed in urban ponds. This raises concerns for the environmental sustainability of aquaculture ponds and AMR’s spread into the food chain.
