The hidden dangers lurking at home: Unveiling the prevalence of leftover antibiotics and its associated factors among Lebanese households
This study investigates the prevalence and factors of leftover antibiotics (LA) in Lebanese households. A cross-sectional study of 494 families found that 23.89% had LA, with penicillin being the most common type. Most LA were in tablets and capsules with valid expiration dates. The main reason for prescribing antibiotics was acute respiratory tract infections. SM was reported by 42.37% of LA families. Families with elderly patients and those in Mount Lebanon had higher odds of having LA. Public educational campaigns should be launched to limit injudicious antibiotic use and promote proper disposal. National programs for safe LA disposal and regulations restricting antibiotic distribution without a prescription are also crucial.
