Filling the Gaps in Dental, Neonatal, And Surgical Antibiotic Stewardship
Inpatient antibiotic stewardship (ASP) is becoming increasingly important as its scope expands to include specialists. Initially, providers viewed ASPs as restricting their autonomy to prescribe or cost-saving programs. However, stewards have learned to apply behavioral change concepts to antimicrobial stewardship. In 2017, the Joint Commission made ASPs a requirement for US hospitals, and since January 2020, stewardship requirements have been applicable to TJC-accredited ambulatory healthcare organizations that routinely prescribe antimicrobial medications. However, engaging clinicians in outpatient settings requires unique strategies compared to inpatient stewardship. ASPs are essential for medical practice, but understanding their value and strategies to engage providers vary among providers. Specialized ASPs are emerging in transplant ID, oncology, pediatrics, neonatal, surgery, and dentistry, requiring additional resources and education.
