Analysis of global emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance in 214k host and environmental samples
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global challenge affecting human, animal, and planetary health. Current surveillance systems focus on clinical prevalences, neglecting non-pathogenic microbes. Metagenomic sequencing aims to recover genes for all organisms in a host or environmental sample, quantifying ARG abundance. This PhD project analyzed 214,095 metagenomic datasets to characterize ARG abundance in host and environmental sources. The study aimed to answer questions on the distribution of ARGs, studying differences in abundance in local ecological settings and global co-occurrence.
